The Mapping Dubliners Project is a digital project featuring two interactive maps of all the locations and routes mentioned in James Joyce’s Dubliners and a blog that examines each of those places in depth. The project began in 2010 and is updated regularly with new essays and map improvements. The first map version was built in Google Maps. A second version was created using the Google Maps “convert to Google Earth file” tool. Once in the Google Earth format, the information was edited and restructured to enable story-centric showing and hiding capabilities. The Google map is available online, and the Google Earth map is downloadable on the Google Earth version page. The blog is updated bi-monthly with a new critical essay over one of the places from the map, including its possible literary interpretations, historical info, and images. These essays are written by the project’s author and Joyce scholars from around the world. To submit a post, see “Contribute to the Blog” above.

In some cases, which are noted in the place descriptions, exact addresses are from Don Gifford, Joyce Annotated: Notes for Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1982). Maps from the online David Rumsey Collection provided information on contemporary buildings, bridges, streets, routes, and places in 19th-century Dublin. Other sources used in the annotations are linked in-text.

The creator of this project, Jasmine Mulliken, received a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011 and spent 5 years as Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Oklahoma State University. She is currently the Digital Production Associate at Stanford University Press.
